The presentation of the HR Explore Award 2021, organized by Voka Antwerpen-Waasland, took place on November 16, 2021. The award rewards the Antwerp-Wase company with the most commendable HR achievement of the past two years. Halito! won the HR Explore Award with the case Sports for holidays where 60 minutes of exercise equals 10 minutes of paid vacation.
A healthy mind in a healthy body
CEO Bart Van Zele explains: “’Mens sana in corpore sano’. Juvenalis already knew it almost 2000 years ago, but the difference between theory and reality can be big and motivation might lack. With this sporty experiment I try to contribute to the famous saying. Colleagues who are looking for a good work-life balance, a balanced life with sufficient exercise and sport, are stimulated by this.”
Rules of Sports for Holidays
Sports is a broad concept: cycling, swimming, running, squash, fitness, but also walking are eligible. “There is no value judgment about the type of sport. For example, participating in a triathlon or taking the dog for a walk makes no difference in that regard. Colleagues should use common sense, but darts and shopping on the Meir are unfortunately not eligible. The most important thing is that you are consciously moving,” says Bart.
There are hardly any other rules of the game, except for a maximum number of hours that each colleague can collect.
Keeping track of sport performances is done with an activity tracker that is available to anyone who wants it. But it only serves to know for yourself how long and intensively you have been exercising. It is not a means of control. “Our corporate culture is very open and based on trust. There is no control mechanism in this.”
The initiative lends itself to be applied in any organization, small or large. Everyone can therefore participate and no one is excluded from exercising for holidays. “I have noticed in recent months that many fellow entrepreneurs are adopting this idea and that is of course great. I hope it will be followed by many more”, Bart concludes.
